Before Coxsone became a recording producer there were several sound system competition against other sounds but the most competitive of all the sound systems was between Coxsone The Downbeat Ruler and Duke Reid The Trojan. Some of the more popular sound systems would look for fog horn to attached to their two thousand watts power house sound system to gain supremacy. However, Coxsone in his travels to the USA during the 1950's brought back on his return to Jamaica to killer tunes. Coxsone Dodd had obtained Later For Gator, an instrumental rhythm & blues tune by the American tenor saxophonist player: Willis " Gatortail" Jackson! Coxsone quest for supremacy in sound clashes, oliberated the name of this tune and renamed it Coxsone Hop. Scraping off the name of a special record title would always guarantee a sound clash victory over Coxsone's fiercest rival; Duke Reid. Coxsone Hop was Coxsone Dodd's Downbeat sound system victory tune. To break Coxsone stronghold, a sound system man would have to get hold of a copy of the tune and play it as often as can, doing that would eventually kill off the tune. Coxsone ruled the sound wave exclusively for 7 years none stop. In any community there is always a Judas betrayer and there was one amongst Coxsone who had betrayed him to Duke Reid his most arched rival sound system operator! | | Knowing the name of the record, Duke Reid decided to take a trip to the United States of America in search for the exclusive platter. Prince Buster at the time was one of Coxsone chief henchman before he himself began producing his own records. When Duke Reid returned from the United States he brought back seven of Coxsone's exclusive tunes and news got to Prince Buster that Duke Reid had finally found the exclusive Coxsone's Hop! Note: Prince Buster in his younger days was very much a feared man amongst the ghetto dwellers! |
