It wasn't that these tunes were exactly new to Coxsone Dodd. It was the fact that the music was being played at rented apartments and in open air venues using a PA system that gave him the idea to set himself up as the person who provides the music and get paid for his efforts. Hence, on his  return to Jamaica he brought with him  a PA system equipment along with turntable and a box with a selection of  records. Clement Dodd named his PA system "Downbeat Ruler" and  began playing the records he had brought back from America, tunes such as bebop, jazz, and rhythm & blues  for the customers who visited  his parents liquor store, which was to be found on Laws Street, in Kingston. The music he played was much enjoyed by the customers. His parents noted the potential of their son's idea with the music being played for the visitors to their liquor store.

They moved from Laws Street  to Beeston Street. The Beeston Street premises had a larger liquor store, and that's  when Clement "Coxsone" Dodd really began his love relationship with music and sounds. From the humble beginning of becoming a sound system operator and proprietor  with his PA system getting orders to play his music at house parties and wedding receptions Clement  Dodd could see his future in his new found operation and began to expand to larger sound systems. From the PA system to owning several sound systems that could be made available for the purpose of hiring out his sounds to various venues ranging from house parties wedding receptions open air garden parties and dance halls.
