Neville Livingston
took to the name of Bunny Wailer. Bunny Wailer
and Peter Tosh went solo, while Bob Marley left
Lesley Kong of the Beverly Records fame to first
join up with Coxsone then to Lee "Scratch" Perry.
Lee Perry who in turn, teamed Bob with a selected
set of musicians from his house musicians he
called the Upsetters
to form Bob Marley & The Wailers: Chris Blackwell
saw the potential in Bob Marley and the Wailers
and signed them up for his Island Record Company;
the rest as we all know, is history, Bob Marley went to become an
International success. Before Chris Blackwell went
to Jamaica to have talks with Bob Marley and the
Wailers , he had owned a market stall in Brixton
market, Central London, UK.
While
there Chris Blackwell
was selling Jamaican produced records at one shilling
for a 45 single The shilling was the old £ s d currency (Pound, Shilling and Pence).
The shilling
was commonly used in the United Kingdom English before the United
Kingdom change over to decimal currency in the early
70s, from that humble beginning Blackwell built
a recording empire known as Island Records
that is now renowned worldwide. It has been rumoured
that there were many a rows between Bob and Chris
Blackwell in regards to money, that Bob Marley and
Chris Blackwell had a bust up outside the Odeon
Theatre at Halfway Tree in Kingston, Jamaica, back
in the 70's but as in most things when there is
money, success and popularity afoot, there always
will be jealously and flow of rumours. Bob Marley
was under contract with Innovative Adventures up
until his death although Bob had his own
recording studio in Jamaica known as "Tuff Gong."
Chris Blackwell helped Bob Marley and The Wailers
on the road to international stardom for him to become
the first Third World superstar.
