King of Sound Systems

RCA Victor Records did not like the idea of Columbia records beating them in technological constraint by developing a new Format before they did. Columbia records had high hope of success for the new format and to convince RCA to join with Columbia in using the new format, but RCA Victor was adamant, they developed the 45rpm record in retaliation. By then the eight minutes had been reduced to around two minutes which the jukebox owners greeted the idea with open arms because they could now get four times the revenue due to the reduction in playing time. The 60's was the rock 'n' roll era which was in full swing and the jukebox owners made a killing from the rock 'n' roll fanatics. These 45rpm, were to become a big hit with collectors and record buyers around the world as they enjoyed 7 inches of pure 45rpm of musical pleasure on vinyl.

The Valve Amps: During the mid-60's, in that little Island of Jamaica, valve amplifiers and the 45-rpm played a useful part in the sound systems arena. Controllers and proprietors of the sound systems such as Clement Seymour Dodd, of Studio One Records fame. The sound systems could be described  as a Mobile Discotheque. Sound Systems were given colourful names like Sir Coxsone the Downbeat Ruler, and Arthur Stanley Reid of the "Treasure Isles Records fame." named his sound systems: The Trojan Sound and Duke Reid: Coxsone, Duke Reid and others, who were in the same line of business, revel in the release and use of the 45-rpm vinyl records, as it was much easier to handle for their competitiveness and utterly intensified sound system clashes. It was Duke Reid who originated the first tournament of sound systems that led to the "King of Sound System Operators."
