Clement Dodd first began producing local
Jamaican artists in the late 1950s, exclusively for his
abundant sound systems. All the early singles were produced,
recorded and pressed at Federal Studios, none of the producers
had thoughts of making albums outright, all albums were
purely compilations of singles that had been previously
recorded. The very first recording Jamaican album was Bob
Marley and the Wailers Catch A Fire which was made at the
Tuff Gong recording studio in the 70's. The Wailers then
consisting of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The
first compilation album to be released by Coxsone Dodd was
All Star Top Hits, made at Federal Recording Studio in 1961.
This was followed by other compilation albums such as I
Cover The Waterfront and Jazz Jamaica in 1962, Jump Jamaica
Way in 1963, and Ska Authentic in 1964.
1963 Dodd set up the Studio One Recording
Studios; the Jamaican Recording and Publishing Studio at
13 Brentford Road in Kingston. Coxsone designed the Studio
One logo to be the chief record label and generic title
for all C.S.Dodd productions. During the seventies in Jamaica
the 12inch 45rpm mix and blend of popular songs became
the vogue of the day. Vocals and dubs were integrated to
become a musical spectacular extravaganza. As a result of
the popularity of these 12inch 45rpm singles, Coxsone Dodd
did a series of compilations and released a few "Showcase"
albums. The American base Heartbeat Recording Studio
has re-issued an album "Nice Up The Dance", which is a compilation
of the previous Showcase Volumes 1 & 2 releases.
